a)            School Profile

Purpose

‘754’ will maximise opportunities to develop resilient individuals in an ever-changing world. (Our Vision Statement)

Values

The values which form the basis of the actions of the whole school community are taken from the ‘Bounce Back’ Program and are as follows:

Integrity: being honest, fair, responsible and loyal and socially ‘just’

Support: supporting and caring for other people

Co-operation: co-operating with other people

Acceptance of difference: accepting, respecting, living with and finding the positive side of differences in others

Respect: respecting the rights of others, and acknowledging your own rights and responsibilities to others in a respectful way

Friendliness: being friendly and socially responsible, and including others in games and conversations

Environmental Context

‘754’ has a long and proud tradition of serving the Bairnsdale community for more than 140 years and the historic building has been classified by the National Trust. The school has strong links with the local community and participates in many local events on a regular basis. The school buildings and grounds are well maintained and all the staff work at presenting vibrant learning spaces. The buildings include a number special purpose built spaces including a multi-purpose hall, music room and library. The school is well resourced and offers a broad curriculum program and is currently introducing VELS across all year levels. There is a wide variety of extra curricular programs offered including a range of music, sports and community programs. The school has an extremely dedicated staff team. The student population is drawn from many diverse family backgrounds with more than 50% being in receipt of the Education Maintenance Allowance and 13% being indigenous. Over recent years the school has experienced a declining enrolment but aims to capitalise on now being the smallest government school in the town.

Goals

Targets

Key Improvement Strategies

Student Learning

To improve student achievement in all learning domains, particularly in English and Mathematics.

All students to achieve the expected growth of 0.5 per year in English (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening) and Mathematics (Number and Measurement) as measured against the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS).

The proportion of students assessed as being at or above the expected standard in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, Number and Measurement show continuous improvement from school benchmark levels in 2006 over the strategic planning period

Develop a shared and clear vision about the expectations for learning both within the school and for each child.  Suggested activities to support this improvement strategy include:

·         with input from the whole school community, review school vision and values

·         review structures and management practices to ensure that every person in the school knows and understands what is expected of them in making their individual and collective contribution to the college strategic objectives

Improve the school’s performance and learning culture through an evaluation of the performance and development culture of the school - using DE&T’s self-assessment framework - and establish a team to implement improvements in the five key areas of the framework, i.e., induction of new staff, feedback, professional development and school culture. Suggested activities to support this improvement strategy include:

·         aligning staff performance plans with the school’s strategic plan and annual implementation plan.

·         establishing for 2007 an overall staff professional development plan that allows staff to engage in professional dialogue and learning that relates to the achievement of the school’s strategic plan.

·         build the capacity of all staff to give and receive feedback.

Establish a rigorous system of accountability and data analysis by which the school and student performance can be evaluated.  Suggested activities to support this improvement strategy include:

·         develop and implement professional learning and development focused around the use of data to improve learning outcomes and teacher accountability

·         encourage regular and systematic interrogation by teachers of all available data that relates to student learning

·         enable teachers to reflect, both individually and collectively, upon their own practices in the light of the wide range of information that is available, including staff review,  AIM data services, student and parent opinion and other relevant locally obtained data sources.

Enhance teaching and learning practices across the school and develop classroom programs and practices that promote high level student outcomes, cater for the individual learning needs of all students and promote high expectations.   Suggested activities to support this improvement strategy include:

·         full Victorian Essential Learning Standards implementation

·         principles of Learning and Teaching implementation and the further development of professional learning teams

·         undertake accreditation as a Performance and Development Culture school in 2008

Improve assessment and moderation practices across the school including developing a deeper understanding of assessment of, for and as learning.  Suggested activities to support this improvement strategy include:

·         undertake DE&T Student Learning on-line assessment professional learning modules

·         undertake professional learning around the use of progression points and annotated work samples to assist in assessing where students are at in order to inform program development.

Student Engagement and Wellbeing

To promote high levels of student engagement in learning and feelings of wellbeing as reflected in the students attitude to schools survey and their positive behaviours.

Parent Opinion related to Student Behaviour, School Climate and School-parent Relations show continuous improvement from school benchmark levels set in the 2006 parent survey over the strategic planning period.

Staff Opinion related to Effective Discipline Policy, Student Orientation, Student Motivation, Student Decision-making, the Learning Environment, Student and Classroom Misbehaviour show continuous improvement from school benchmark levels set in the 2006 staff opinion survey over the strategic planning period.

Student opinion related to Teachers and Teaching and Feelings about Yourself and School show continuous improvement from school benchmark levels set in the 2006 student opinion survey over the strategic planning period.

Student Attendance levels show continuous improvement from school benchmark levels set in the 2006 to be equal or better State mean levels by 2009.

Increase the range of student opinion data that is collected and analysed to inform classroom practice

Develop whole school processes and specific strategies to facilitate improved levels of student engagement in their learning.  This may be achieved through embedding the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PoLT) in classroom practices

Regularly review the Student Code of Conduct to evaluate whether it is meeting the needs of the school and is being applied in a consistent fashion

Further develop current initiatives that enhance student wellbeing. (e.g.  Student Leadership, the role of the Student School Council)

Enhance the philosophy of giving students a voice and involving them in school decision making

Improve accountability practices in the follow up of student absenteeism

Evaluate programs such as ‘It’s not OK to be away’ and their viability to re-educate student/parent community

Student Pathways and Transitions

To strengthen the transition of students into, through and out of the school.

Parent opinion data in pathways and transition areas show continuous improvement from school benchmark levels set in the new 2006 DE&T parent survey document over the strategic planning period

Further develop and implement a whole school process to enhance continuity of programs and acknowledgement of student performance across year levels so students can be tracked and monitored as they progress through the school.   Suggested activities to support this improvement strategy include:

·         formalise the time and document the procedures used by teachers to exchange information about students

·         recognise the ‘pathways’ expansion opportunities that arise through full implementation of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards such as considering the use of Personalised Learning Plans for all students as part of the Personal Learning Domain Standards and goal setting as part of the Interpersonal Development Domain Standards

·         investigate further methods to connect students to school and to strengthen the parent-school partnership in the education of students such as further developing the use of three way teacher-parent-student interviews

Seek feedback from parents and students regarding pathways and transitions.  Suggested activities to support this improvement strategy include:

·         target the families of exit students for constructive feedback regarding school programs and transition support

·         target the families of new and returning students for feedback regarding levels of satisfaction and opportunities for improvement as regards the transition program
